The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles has given approval for COLORADO DRIVING INSTITUTE to administer the State Driving Exam for any Colorado resident who holds a valid Colorado State Instructional Permit. In most cases; No car is needed, no insurance is necessary, and we have times available sooner than the DMV!
All drive test require a valid Colorado Instructional Permit.
- You must bring either the plastic card, paper temp from the DMV, or your phone with the mycolorado app with your permit loaded in there.
- No pictures of your permit. Has to be the Physical Copy or the Digital permit via the MyColorado app.
- If you hold an out of state permit and are under 18 years old there is an exception, see below for more details.

How Long is the Test?
- All drive tests are 30 minutes, but appointments are in 40 minute blocks to allow for validating your permit and for paperwork required before and after the exam.

You can take a Colorado State Driving Exam with us!
- You are not required to bring a car
- You will use one of our vehicles.
- You will not need any additional insurance.
Simply Sign up and bring yourself and your permit with you to the appointment.

If you are under 18 years of age you must meet the following requirement to take the state driving test.
- Hold a valid Colorado Instructional Permit
- Be at Least 16 years old
- Have held your permit for one calendar year from the issue date (ex: Issued 7/11/19, you can take the test on or after 7/11/20)
If your permit is Interlock restricted, be sure to bring the following:
- An interlock vehicle
- Proof of insurance for the vehicle (Paper or digital copy on phone is fine)
- County Registration for the vehicle (paper copy from the county the vehicle is regisered)
- Your CO Restricted Permit
- The car must be able to pass a safety inspection (includes but not limited to; lights, blinkers, mirrors, and front windows & doors all work properly, etc). If you need more details or have questions please call.
The State has sent you a letter indicating you must take a Drivers Exam in the next 20 days or they will revoke your license. If this the case you are facing you will require the following to be brought your appointment.
- Your Colorado Drivers License
- The letter showing you require a re-exam. This must be within the 20 day window indicated in the letter. We can not do exams after the 20 day window.
You took a test with us but didn’t pass. You need to schedule a re-test for the next day or a later date. You can not retest the same day. If you hold a valid out of state instructional permit and under are 18 years old you can take 1 and only 1 Colorado state driving exam on your out of state minor instructional permit. If you fail you will be required to then get a Colorado Instructional Permit. Once you have that CO Permit you can re-test.
- First you need to start the license application process. Go To the State of Colorado Application webpage here
- Sign up with the button below and use your Pre-registration Confirmation number in place of your permit # when you sign-up.
- You still must adhere to holding your permit for 1 calendar year before testing.
You will be required to bring the following:
- Colorado Motorcycle Permit
- A Motorcycle that can pass inspection
- Insurance (Paper or Digital)
- Registration (This must be the Physical County Paperwork)
